First of all: just discovered your blog the other day and have been loving it so far. :)
Regarding vitamin D, I do spend a fair amount of time outdoors just by dent of not having a car - I do a lot of walking and/or sitting outside waiting on a bus. Though that's not the same as spending all day outside, it is a lot more than most people get, I think, shuttling around and only being outside the distance from their parking space to the building they are going to. A couple of years back, I got my vitamin D tested during a checkup and I was holy-mother-of-crazy low. The doc told me to take LOTS of vitamins. I took "normal" amounts of vitamins, and barely upticked at all. Took twice that amount, and still barely registered an increase on the next blood test. I thought, WTH, I'm outside and taking vitamins, and I'm STILL that low?
At the time, I was a very strict vegetarian. Nowadays I'm more of a flexitarian - mostly still veg but I will eat some animal stuffs. I feel a lot better health-wise now (I had really low blood sugar before, the added protein has been AWESOME for me). I wonder if my vitamin D levels have gone up, too!
I agree wholeheartedly that a lot of our modern problems can be resolved with cleaner/healthier/more natural diet and lifestyle. It took a lot for me to let go of the vegetarianism. I've only been thus for a few months. Next checkup, I'll ask for a new vitamin D test. ;)

aw!
sage, i haven't been here in ages! in the past 24 hours i have read this post and also seen a review of a book called "The One Dimensional Woman," "Nina Power's One Dimensional Woman (0 Books, £7.99) was a welcome reminder that there is more to feminism than Either/Or (Pradettes apussyfooting in Jimmy Choos/Moms amoosehunting on the campaign trail). A rabblerousing joy to read. --Helen DeWitt, Books of the Year, New Statesman"
