Lunch on the Road- no car necessary

We look upon a tasty and elegant meal from garden produce on upper Shattuck in Berkeley’s ‘gourmet ghetto’- as home to Chez Panisse, the Cheese Board, and others this is not a surprising image. Except that this lunch is taking the place where a car should be and is free and open to all passers-by. The organizers of this particular PARKing Day feast raise some compelling ideas about access to the gourmet, the loss of community around food when kept in expensive retail contexts, and of course like all PARKing Day installations challenges the use of public space solely for the car.

They had a number of people join them freely

Conversations drowned out the traffic

Beautiful fruits and veggies from Alcatraz Garden !
